Geelong Veteran Cycling Club
16 riders contested the Geelong Veterans cyclists Fathers Day sealed handicap in windy conditions.
A slight delay to the start time to allow the Club and State Handicappers to ready themselves after helping clear the course of downed tree limbs felled by the gale force winds during the night.
3 Laps with a strong wind blowing greeted the 16 riders who had a massed start in the Father’s day sealed handicap.
The race was controlled till the start of Forest road.
Steve Young attacked once on Forest road and rode away from the remaining riders, to complete the remaining 2 &3/4 laps by himself.
Neil Maurer, Rob Nicholls, Kane Airey, Colin Hooper , Stan Gregorio & Carl Leahy managed to form a smooth working bunch soon after Steve’s attack and also ride away from the remaining riders.
Ralph Wright & Joe Gulino left the remaining riders to try and catch the afore mentioned bunch of 6.
They only managed to catch the dropped rider Stan with the other dropped rider Carl Leahy blowing up and U turning back to the Club!.
Those three worked together for the next lap until the pace set by Joe was to much for Stan & he left Ralph and Joe to their steady solid pace.
Dave Phillips was the next rider to catch Stan and work with him til the finish line.
Ross West was the next rider to jump clear of the remaining riders and maintain his pace to keep clear of those behind him.
Michael Dunstan, Ian Sumner & Chris Colley chased valiantly but only managed to drop Irwin Saunders and not catch Ross.
Irwin Saunders also finding the tough conditions and pace to much to allow him to complete the course.
Ken Mansfield puncturing early on in the race precluded him from finishing.
Steve Young greeted the judges solo in 57m 30s with the next three riders 2m 24s behind and the fifth rider 2s back, sixth & seventh 3m 51s back, eighth& ninth 42s back, tenth 3m 51s back, eleventh , twelfth & thirteenth 22s back.

Peter Hosking Memorial Handicap
5 laps/58 km
The Peter Hosking Memorial was held in extremely windy conditions from the west but no rain eventuated making for tolerably riding. The combine race with Colac saw a total field of 23 riders which included 8 riders from Colac. Limit riders of Gil Wright and Bernadette Rowbottom started the race by more than 27 mins to scratch and had completed a lap as 2nd scratch riding off 4mins consisting of 6 riders set off up Hendy Main rd. For the first 2 laps most groups held together but the tough conditions saw Eddy Ziedaitis and Peter McDonough both being dropped by their respective groups. Peter feeling the intensity of the race even left his brekkie on the side of the road. By the 4th lap Bernadette who was now riding solo was caught by the 22 min group and Ross West lost both of his riders from his 18:30 group now riding back with the 15:30 group.
Going into the final lap the field had devolved into 3 groups being the leading bunch who commanded a 4min lead over the 4 min bunch who, were still riding as an intact group and the 3 scratch riders a further 2mins behind. Heading up Hendy Main for the last time the lead bunch of riders cracked riding into the wind and by the time they turned into Forest rd they were strung out going over the rises. The 4 min bunch could now sense blood as they mopped up the stragglers along Grays road but knew the scratchies were pressing hard and were closing down the gap fast. The 4 min bunch finally caught Dennis Sonongan who had bravely ridden solo down Grays with 400mts to the Grays/Hendy Main corner, but were now only 200mts ahead of scratch. With 2kms to the line scratch rider Tony McGann hit the front of a 12 man field and upped the ante and put in powerful surge for the next kilometre along with strong wind gusts from the side played havoc with riders which softened up the group, whilst the other scratch riders of Steve Young and David Lunn biding their time.
With 500mts to the line Tony pulled over and in the mean time had broken the field into 2 leaving just 5 riders to contest a final charge to the line. David Lunn and Steve Young then made their move and sprinted past rick buckwell, Carl Leahy and Ralph Islet and continued on to the line and took out first and second respectively while the minor placings went to Ralph, Rick and Carl.
Final results:
| 1st | David Lunn | Scratch | Colac | 1:31:58 |
| 2nd | Steve Young | Scratch | Geelong | |
| 3rd | Ralph Iselt | 4:00 | Colac | |

Nobles Rd return, Forest Rd return & finish - 49km Handicap
18 riders took to the road in strong north westerly’s that was always going to test the mettle of all riders. All bunches stayed in tack for the Nobles rd return leg, it was on the outward leg of the Forest rd where the 9 & 18 and the 2:30 & 5 min bunches combined to make for some competitive riding.
With 10kms to go, scratch riders Steve Young and Peter McDonough finally caught the 2:30 group after some hard chasing into the wind. The tempo of the race went up a notch as this group pressed on in search of the lead riders. With 5kms to go not only did the pace hot up but some argy bargy between riders developed, which created some confusion and loss of focus of the chasing riders. As the riders charged up Hendy main rd Kane Airey had broken away from his group and was riding for his life in an effort to hold off a disjointed chasing bunch that had lost some initiative.
Steve who had pulled over into the gravel then came from the rear of the bunch hotly chased by Robbie Nichols who was not going to let him go without a fight, along with mal Lloyd. With 100mts to the line Kane was caught by Steve along with Rick Buckwell who had now tacked on as well. With the final charge to the line Steve held off Rick by 2 lengths with Kane hanging in for 3rd with Peter toughing it out for fastest time.
Final results:
1st Steve Young (Scratch)
2nd Rick Buckwell (2min)
3rd Kane Airey (5min)
4th Bill McConnell
5th Peter Ladd
Fastest Time Peter McDonough (Scratch) 1:37:06

Twenty four riders.
Conditions cold and windy, a strong south westerly, the race was reduced to 4 laps 46 km.
Under these trying conditions it was always going to be a back markers day, after 3 laps the time keeper had half of the field with him to witness the judging of the finish.
Into the start of the 4th lap, scratch and the 1:30 bunch had combined, still chasing a minute to the 4:00 min bunch, finally catching them at the crest of the Forest Road hill.
Scratch, taking no passengers asserted their authority gradually dislodging the hangers, and then came the climax of the day when the newest member of the scratch bunch, Daryl Suter hit the line only centimeters in front of Steve Young.
Final results:
1st Darryl Suter

Blackgate Rd Return, Forest Rd Return + 1 lap - 59 kms
In sunny but bitterly cold conditions 14 riders tackled the 59km blackgate rd and return/forest rd and return + 1 lap, circuit. Gil Wright led off from limit commanding a 25 min start on scratch and rode solo for the entire race to claim victory.
By the 40km scratch had been able to reel in the riders from the 7, 11 & 18 min bunches as they pressed on in search of Gil. With 2kms to go and still no sign of Gil the remaining 10 riders started to prepare for the minor placings. With 500mts to the line Michael Hartman swooped from the rear of the pack followed by Nick Oakley to take everyone by surprise and put a 50 mt gap in, but Rick Buckwell and Carl Leahy took off after them and caught them with 100mts to the line and continued on to fight out a tough tussle to the line to take out 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Sunday the 11th of April saw the staging of the Hendy Cycles Combine with the Colac Club.
Raced over 4 laps (46 kms) we had 29 riders, start in an extremely bad Westerly wind with rain during the race, making it a hard, cold day.
With this in mind, I thought the Scratchmen would get up, but they failed by 70 seconds, when crossing the line.
Colin Hooper and Tony Prytz got across to the bunch in front very early, making a strong combined bunch, which stayed together for the final sprint, where Colin Hooper, just pipped Neil Maurer.
